The Truth About Omega 3

  David McEvoy

Since Dr Basant Puri, a consultant psychiatrist and senior lecturer at
London’s Imperial College MRI unit, released his findings on Omega 3 and
its effect on brain function and depression, many studies have been
performed regarding the beneficial effects this fatty acid. Studies over
the past two years have consistently confirmed that Omega 3, a substance
lacking in today’s “diet” is a key component in the brain’s development
and proper functioning.

The notion that Omega 3 was linked to depression and other mental
illnesses came about based on studies conducted at Harvard University in
1999 on people with bipolar and a 1996 study by the Journal of the
American Medical Association studying the prevalence of depression across
ten countries. The Harvard study found that fish oil was an effective
treatment for bipolar. The study conducted by the Journal of the American
Medical Association was expanded upon in 1998 when it was discovered that
depression was lower in countries that consumed higher levels of fish.

Omega 3 As Part Of A Healthy Diet

Omega 3 is a substance found most commonly in fatty fish such as fresh
salmon, tuna, mackerel, pilchards and sardines. Over the last 100 years
the western diet has shifted radically to include far less fish and thus
the Omega 3 fatty acid. During the same time depression is estimated to
have increased up to 100 fold.

To maintain ideal health, the average person should consume five grams
daily of essential fatty acids (divided between Omega 3 and Omega 6). As
this is not likely to change at any point in the near future some
recommendations have been laid out for those who choose to take Omega 3
supplements. These recommendations will be listed further below in the
section titled, “Omega 3 Supplements”.

Omega 3 And The Brain

While the benefits of Omega 3 fatty acids can be noticed on many levels,
the biggest breakthroughs documented have occurred in improved mental
functions and health. Omega 3 has been reported to be effective in the
treatment of depression. Numerous studies have indicated that during
double-blind tests, patients suffering from depression who take Omega 3
over a placebo report significant benefits.

Similar results have been reported in the treatment of bipolar and
schizophrenia. There are theories that Omega 3 could be used to treat
other mental conditions such as attention deficit disorder, borderline
personality disorder, dyslexia and cognitive impairment however at the
time of this writing these beliefs are unsubstantiated by anything more
than preliminary data.

Omega 3 And The Body

The main reported benefits of Omega 3 for the body occur in the heart.
The American Heart Association recommends eating fatty fish at least
twice per week in order to reduce the likelihood of heart disease.

While research is still ongoing into the effects of these fatty acids on
the heart, research to date has shown that they:

·decrease risk of arrhythmias, which can lead to sudden cardiac death
·decrease triglyceride levels
·decrease growth rate of atherosclerotic plaque
·lower blood pressure (slightly)
Additionally, Omega 3 has been reported effective as an
anti-inflammatory. And according to an article by Judith Horstman for
Arthritis Today, “There’s strong evidence that fish oil supplements with
omega-3 fatty acids can ease rheumatoid arthritis (RA) symptoms, help
prevent Raynaud’s syndrome spasms and possibly relieve some lupus
symptoms.

There is some limited evidence that the reduction in Omega 3 in the
average western diet can be a contributing factor to the rise in:

·asthma
·chronic fatigue syndrome
·cystic fibrosis
·osteoporosis
·prostate cancer

Omega 3 Supplements

Any good doctor or nutritionist will tell you that the best way to get
any nutrient is to go right to the source and eat it through the foods
they originate. In the case of Omega 3 this would most likely be in the
form of fatty fish, flaxseed, walnuts, canola oil and soybean oil. That
said, this is not always possible given the average westerner’s diet and
lifestyle. Additionally, for those suffering from sever depression or
using Omega 3 to combat an existing condition, the amount contained in
the foods we eat may not provide enough of this fatty acid. If this is
the case then it is important to know what you are looking for.

The supplement should be high in EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid). EPA, along
with DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) are the two active ingredients in Omega
3. EPA is considered to be the therapeutic element. It is thus important
to purchase a supplement higher in EPA than DHA.

Additional Notes

Due to the recent developments and study of Omega 3 and all of its
potential health benefits, the majority of studies and information on it
are preliminary and based on smaller test groups. Additional research is
underway and should provide additional insight into how it works and
exactly what its role is in the brain’s functioning and development.

Currently additional studies are ongoing into the roll of Omega 3 in
brain and nerve regeneration, depression, heart disease, arthritis,
cancer, neck and back pain, stress and an assortment of other mental and
physical conditions.

medical society. This cliché has been proven a thousand times over from
the very first physicians in history. Indeed, since you know your body
well, if you begin to feel different and unlike your usual vitality, it’s
time for you to know what’s wrong with you. Being aware of changes in
your body helps to know the right steps to take in preventing whatever
ailment is coming down upon you.

Now, are you prone to common colds and is allergic? Do you start feeling
more sinus pressure in the mornings? Do you feel increased congestion?
Are headaches bothering you? If you answer “yes”, it may be that you are
having the beginnings of a sinus infection and the cliché we’ve just
given applies to you now …

Don’t delay until your sinus gets to painful and a major sinus infection

on whatever needs to be prohibited and controlled in their daily diets
and routine to prevent serious illness. Now is the time for you to start
a prevention program against serious sinus infections!

In starting up your own prevention program against sinus infection, here
are several important things to consider:

-As you daily brush your teeth to prevent tooth decay, try doing daily
nasal irrigation, too. There are new inventions on nasal irrigation –
check out the Grossan Pulsatile Nasal Irrigation System.

-Keep your sinuses moist.
oUsing a natural saline spray sever times daily may be added to your
day-to-day routine.
oEnsure that you’ll be getting enough moisture at night, use a humidifier
in your bedroom if necessary.

-Prevent drinking iced drinks, including tea and soda.

-It’s not the time for you to exert too much especially when you’re
already down with cold or having asthma attacks. Adequate rest is best
prevention, too.

-Exercise, exercise, exercise! — Outdoor types of exercise may help to
increase your circulation.

-Reduce the swelling of your sinuses.
oDissolving papaya enzymes in your mouth between your cheek and gum may
be done 4x daily.
oTaking plenty of hot showers and inhaling steam may also help
oUsing of hot compresses may also be done

-Prevent the attack of allergies which adds to the stress on your sinuses
oDuring allergy season, especially if you are an allergy sufferer, be
aware that the peak time for allergens is between 5 – 10am.
oBe sure that your bedroom is allergen-free
oTo keep allergens under control, try using hepa air filters, hepa
vacuums and dust mite covers.

It’s always recommended, too, to have that visit with your doctor to know
definitely how you really are. There are stages in sinus infections you
need to be aware of. So, start bringing out that health buff inside of
you and do battle against full bloom sinus infection!

What’s The Hoopla About Ephedra Anyway?

banner1a Whats The Hoopla About Ephedra Anyway?

  Todd Brenner

Ephedra is one of the world’s oldest medicines, as the Chinese first
discovered it more than 5,000 years ago. The scientific name for Ephedra
is ‘Ephedra Sinica’, which is an herbal product that comes from an
evergreen plant called MaHuang. Ephedra is known to increase metabolism,
relax the air passages, promote perspiration and promote urination. With
these reactions in the body, Ephedra has been shown to help with weight
loss, asthma, coughs, minor colds and edema.

Physiologically, Ephedra stimulates the brain, causing nervousness and
making the heartbeat faster. Ephedra temporarily expands the tubes that
carry air to the lungs (bronchial tubes), which makes breathing easier in
people who have asthma and other respiratory illnesses. Ephedra is best
known for its fat burning (thermogenic) properties. Some research shows
the ephedra promotes fat loss while sparing lean muscle. People also use
Ephedra as an energy booster and to help with weight loss.

According to the FDA’s website, the short-term use of Ephedra or Ephedra
plus caffeine is associated with a statistically significant increase in
short-term weight loss compared to placebo. There are no studies
assessing the long-term effects of the use of Ephedra containing dietary
supplements.

Given the studies on short-term effectiveness, you may consider using
Ephedra for a shorter length of time while you are concentrating on
reaching your weight loss target. Be sure to consume Ephedra according to
industry guidelines, which suggest no more than 10mg of Ephedra per day.

Whole House Water Filters

  Mandy Thomson

So you know the benefits of purifying your drinking water and have
already installed a filter for your kitchen tap. But what happens when
you get thirsty upstairs and the closest water faucet is in the bathroom?
This is where a whole house water filter system will benefit you.

A whole house water filter produces purified water for all water sources
in your house. Because it is a point-of-entry system, you will have
purifed wter for every faucet, bathtub, even toilet in your

ISO

 .

Using filtered water to flush toilets and wash dishes may seem like a
waste at first glance. However, reducing household chlorine chlorine
could play a crucial role in the well being of you and your family. The
Environmental Protection Agency states “Every household in America, on
municipally treated water, has an elevated level of chloroform gas in the
area, specifically in showering, washing dishes, washing clothes, and
flushing toilets.”

Chloroform is a poisoness byproduct of chlorine that may cause damage to
the nervous system and kidneys. Chlorine has also been linked to asthma.
Several studies have linked chlorine inhalation from swimming or working
in pools to severe asthma-like symptoms.

Imagine the cost and hassle of installing a tap and shower filter in
every water source in your

ISO
9002 ACCREDITED NATURIST HERBAL REMEDY

. A whole house water filter would more
efficiently remove contaminants in the long run at the fraction of the
cost. The initial installation will require a plumber. However, further
maintenance (such as replacing filter cartridges) can be done on your own.

When choosing a water filter, check that the product is officially
certified. Compare different water filter systems to see how efffective
they are at removing different contaminants. Make sure your whole house
water filter does not remove the healthful minerals with the
contaminants. Removing important substances can cause mineral
deficiencies in the long run. Also check that product comes with a
warranty. (Usually this is free.)

The benefits of a whole house water filter far outweigh the costs in the
long run. A whole house water filter will give you the peace of mind of a
household water supply free from potentially dangerous contaminants.
Besides good tasting and clear water for your entire household, you will
be contributing to the long-term health of you and your family.

Who’s the You Running Your Life?

banner1a Whos the You Running Your Life?

  Keith Varnum

Get Drama and Trauma Out of Your Karma

You finally make a friend or get a hot date with someone you’re attracted
to-then blow it by acting aloof or not being yourself.

Have you ever had the experience of deciding to take a certain action,
but end up doing something quite different? Crazy! Why do we do that?
Often our actions are being run by decisions we made as a kid. Decisions
that went on automatic, underground, behind-the-scenes, and now, affect
us unconsciously. Decisions that are now controlling our actions in the
present moment without us being aware of them.

You land an exciting job-then blow it by “copping an attitude” with the
boss or customers.

Why do we get so off track after we begin with such good intention and
courage? It’s those pesky childhood decisions! As we grew up, we
developed strategies to survive at

ISO
9002 ACCREDITED NATURIST HERBAL REMEDY

www.healasthma.com

and in school. We wanted our
parents’ love and attention and a safe place to live. We wanted to
belong, get asked to the prom, and pass exams-while not getting beaten up
by the school bully or humiliated by gossip.

We decided to act in certain ways to keep ourselves as socially
acceptable and secure as possible.

Congratulations, You Succeeded!

The survival strategies you developed as a kid worked! These behavior
patterns were good, positive, beneficial, even brilliant. They succeeded
in doing the job they were designed to do in that situation at that time.
The proof-you’re reading this. These tactics kept you alive! Perhaps a
bit bruised, but still breathing. Breathing, but maybe not as happy as
you could be.

Once a Friend-Now a Foe

Have you noticed you’re still using some of the same behavioral
strategies to get what you want as an adult that you used in your youth?

Playing naïve. Being passive-aggressive. Manipulative. Moody. Sarcastic.
Confused. Spacey. Overly sexy. Other kid tactics: Pouting. Flirting.
Whining. Complaining. Hiding. Running away. Giving up. Fantasizing.
Acting dumb. Having accidents. Getting sick. Playing tough. Acting the
fool. Telling white lies. Acting like a victim. Pretending you’re someone
you’re not.

Do these tactics work currently in your adult life to create what you
really want-loving mutual relationships, lasting support from people and
the universe, vibrant health, boundless energy, real joy? Usually not!
Since the circumstances and nature of our adult challenges have changed
dramatically since we were young, most kid strategies are no longer
appropriate or effective. In fact, these old tactics now get in the way
of reaching our goals.

Why Don’t Childhood Successes Work for Adults?

Because any behavior that is unconscious and automatic can’t adjust to
new, different and changing situations. So, these conditioned childhood
survival strategies come back to haunt us when we use them as adults-like
disruptive ghosts from the past. As adults, we still seek to be liked, to
be included, and to make the grade at work. But instead of applying fresh
intuitive responses that are appropriate to the current challenges, we
are on autopilot-unconsciously controlled by the programmed decisions we
made to deal with the trauma and drama of our childhood.

Here are two real-life examples my friend Sulana shares from her life
that demonstrate how childhood decisions affect the way we create life in
the present:

The Great Pretender

“When I was young, my punishment du jour was being sent to my room. My
room became a safe haven from the rantings and irrational behavior of my
alcoholic parents. To lessen the scoldings and whippings, I quickly
learned to stay silent about what I felt or observed. I naturally created
strategies to keep myself as safe as possible: hiding my feelings,
telling white lies, using sarcasm, and spending lots of time alone. And I
discovered I got attention from my parents by getting ill or acting
confused. So, I developed asthma and played dumb.

“Now as an adult, I long for honest, expressive relationships with
co-workers and employers-and playful, truthful relationships with friends
and lovers. But my own unconscious behavior sabotages the openness and
intimacy I so deeply desire. I try to get people to talk about themselves
without revealing anything about myself. I pretend to not know
information that I do know. And I look for attention and love from other
people by getting sick and playing helpless and spacey.”

The Ex-Flower Child

“At first my new job delivering flowers was right up my alley. I enjoyed
the time driving gave me to be with myself. Then the management changed
our original agreement and required that I work more hours and drive
longer distances for less pay. Running on my childhood programming, I
kept my resentment to myself and became moody. I felt like a victim,
taken advantage of, powerless. I pouted and whined to myself. When I
talked to the boss, I was angry and copped an attitude. It wasn’t long
before I got fired.”

Who’s the You Who Makes You Do?

What do YOU do to try to make friends, stay safe, fit in, be loved? Until
we undo these conditioned strategies, the decisions we made when we were
children run all aspects of our lives in the present: from relationships
and health to finances and work.

You can easily discover the automatic behaviors that are running you.
Scan through your life. Make a list of the challenges you encountered
throughout your life. What are the specific, unique problems you had to
face at your

ISO
9002 ACCREDITED NATURIST HERBAL REMEDY

www.healasthma.com

, school, college, job-and with your parents, relatives,
friends, teachers and co-workers? What personal strategies did you
develop to get yourself through the challenges of your journey? Are you
still using similar tactics? Are these approaches successful?

Intuition to the Rescue

The good news is that when you identify the past programmed strategies
that don’t work in your present life, you can create new strategies that
do work. The once necessary kid tactics that kept you safe and
balanced-like training wheels of a bicycle-can be discarded. You are now
capable of keeping yourself balanced and safe using the guiding wisdom of
your intuition and acquired life experience.

Successful Alternatives Surround You

Exciting and playful alternative strategies are all around you. Lots of
people have discovered original, creative ways of dealing with situations
similar to yours. Fresh ideas and models are demonstrated in the lives of
truly happy and successful people. With keen eyes and perked ears, you
can glean fun and compassionate life strategies from biographies,
interviews, TV, movies, books, news, magazines and advice columns. Seek
out a mentor, shaman or other personal advisor. Let your intuition guide
you to an inspiring workshop or professional coach.

Good luck. Have a good time creating new approaches to life that work!

After what you’ve been through, you deserve it!

A room humidifier can help raise the level of humidity or moisture in the
air. Increasing the humidity in the

helps eliminate the dry air that
can irritate and inflame the respiratory passages in the nose and throat.
A room humidifier can help relieve the discomfort of colds and the flu,
and help people who suffer from asthma.
When humidified air is breathed in, the water vapor adds moisture to
secretions in the upper airway. This makes the secretions more fluid so
it may be easier to cough them up. A humidifier can work only for the
upper airway. Water vapor droplets made by a humidifier do not usually
reach the lower airways, which include the trachea, or windpipe, and the
lungs.
In the past, a steam humidifier was commonly used. A newer humidifier,
also known as a vaporizer, uses special energy waves to break water down
into a vapor. This results in smaller droplets than were possible with a
steam humidifier. The energy waves also kill any bacteria or mold that
may be in the water or the machine.
A special type of humidifier called a nebulizer can be used to deliver
medication to the airway. A nebulizer is often used to treat asthma. It
generates smaller water vapor droplets that are able to reach the small
airways in the lungs. Certain medications, such as albuterol, can be
dissolved in water and given with a nebulizer.
The medications are then able to reach the lungs in greater concentration
than if taken by mouth. A new approach is to give some antibiotics by
nebulizer. This type of humidifier seems to work very well on lower
airway infections in children with cystic fibrosis a serious inherited
condition that damages the lungs. A room humidifier may be just the help
you need.

Why Do People Become Allergic, And Why Are Allergies On The

banner1a Why Do People Become Allergic, And Why Are Allergies On The

  Jane Thurnell-Read

Allergies are on the increase – a third of the population believe that
they suffer from allergies, and even though some of these people may be
mistaken, everyone agrees that eczema, asthma, hay fever, irritable bowel
syndrome, etc. are now more and more common. So, what has happened?

It is often unclear why a person has a tendency to be allergic or
intolerant to a range of substances. Medical practitioners talk about
‘atopic individuals’ – atopic means ‘out of place’. To the unknowing this
sounds like a medical diagnosis, but in fact all it means is: You have a
tendency to have allergies; you may have several different symptoms
caused by your allergic reactions; this often runs in families; we don’t
know why. Describing someone as an atopic individual is not saying
anything the person does not already know about themself!

Genetic Predisposition
Allergy problems undoubtedly do run in families, so there may be a
genetic component, although the exact mechanism is not clearly
understood. Some small genetic mutation can cause the immune system to be
triggered more easily, so that family members sharing this mutation will
all have a tendency to allergic reactions, although not necessarily to
the same substances, but this does not explain the rise in the incidence
of allergies in recent years.

Severe Virus Infections
A severe virus infection can lead to damage to the immune system, so that
the individual is more likely to develop allergies in the future. Again,
although this may explain why someone has allergies, the incidence of
virus infections is not on the increase.

So we have to look elsewhere to explain the rise, and there are several
completely different possibilities.

Parasites
One allergy theory now being proposed is that the lack of the proper
enemies (liver fluke, tapeworms, etc.) has led to an idle immune system
finding inappropriate work in allergic reactions. There are many
antibodies produced in the body to protect it against invasion by harmful
organisms. IgE antibodies deal effectively and quickly with the extreme
danger of infection by large parasites, such as tapeworms. Parasites’
effect on health can be devastating, so over the years individuals with
efficient IgE mechanisms have lived to reproduce and pass on their genes
at a greater rate than people with a less efficient IgE mechanism. The
IgE antibodies are also involved in allergic and hypersensitivity
reactions, so people with these inherited efficient IgE mechanisms are
more likely to suffer allergy problems than people who have inherited a
less efficient system. This super-charged immune system was a plus for an
asthma sufferer’s distant ancestors inhabiting a world with many
life-threatening parasites, but now leads to a ‘trigger-happy’ immune
system firing off inappropriately.

Other practitioners (notably Hulda Clark in ‘Cure For All Diseases’) take
the opposite view, and see many allergy symptoms as being a reaction to
an infestation of parasites.

Excessive Cleanliness
The obsession with the danger of ‘germs’ is thought to have led to an
increase in allergies. Much of this obsession with cleanliness seems to
be driven by the media and advertising. Headlines about ‘killer bugs’,
and advertisements that claim a product kills even more germs have led
many people to buy more and more products to wipe out these dangerous
enemies. A view now gaining ground among many researchers and some
doctors is that a certain level of dirt is good for us, particularly
during infancy and early childhood when the immune system is maturing.

T-helper cells in the immune system recognise foreign antigens and then
secrete substances to activate other cells to fight the invader. In
pregnancy the T-helper cells that attack invaders directly without
producing antibodies (Th1 cells) are less active, as these could lead the
mother’s system to reject the foetus. This means that the T-helper cells
that are responsible for antibody reactions (Th2 cells) are more
prominent. These are the ones that are involved in allergic reactions.
The new baby’s immune system has the same emphasis as the mother’s had
during pregnancy. It is believed that the exposure of the very young to
some level of ‘dirt’ is beneficial in that it helps to rebalance the
immune system to emphasise the T-helper cells that are not involved in
the allergy process.

In an excellent article (‘New Scientist’ July 18th 1998) Garry Hamilton
talks about ‘the gentler side of germs’. If the young are not exposed to
‘dirt’, the immune system does not go through this rebalancing process,
and a tendency to allergy can result. Linda Gamblin in ‘The Allergy
Bible’ cites several medical research projects, which support the idea of
allowing children to be exposed to dirt and minor infections to help
protect against allergies.

Vaccination
Our children are now being vaccinated against a bigger and bigger range
of diseases. While some of these are serious, many are mild illnesses
that were once considered part of a normal childhood. Many alternative
practitioners consider that these childhood illnesses help to prime the
immune system so that it is better able to cope with a whole range of
illnesses later in life. This view is not accepted by most of the medical
profession, and indeed it would be difficult to prove. However, there is
some evidence that vaccination alters the ratio of T-helper cells and
T-suppresser cells. This would be likely to have an effect on the
vaccinated child’s susceptibility to allergy reactions. It is also known
that most vaccines stimulate the branch of the immune system that is
concerned with the more extreme immune reactions to invaders such as
parasites (‘New Scientist’ July 18th 1998).

Ubiquitous Presence Of Some Foods
Before the advent of freezers and airfreight most people ate local foods
in season. Now most fruit and vegetables are available all year round, so
that our systems are exposed to the same foods continually without
respite.

There has been a dramatic increase in people experiencing soya allergy,
since soya has become a common ingredient in many processed foods. In
Europe and North America rice allergy is relatively uncommon, whereas in
Asia where it is consumed more frequently it is much more common.

Technological Developments
Developments that make modern life more comfortable have also led to an
increase in allergies. With the advent of air conditioning, central
heating and wall-to-wall carpeting house dust mites and moulds such as
alternaria have an ideal environment in which to thrive. Modern offices
with sealed windows mean that everyone is exposed to the perfumes worn by
other people. The increasing use of plastics, formaldehyde, benzene etc.
have led to all of us being exposed to an amazing variety of chemicals.

Contamination By Environmental Pollutants
The chemicals in diesel fumes are known to damage the outer membranes of
pollens. This means that when the pollen is breathed in, the pollen
proteins are immediately in much closer contact with the delicate
membranes in the mouth, nose and lungs than they would be if the pollen
had not been damaged in this way.

It has now also been suggested that the immune system is reacting to some
harmless substances because they have been contaminated by environmental
pollution: the immune system does not recognise the food, for example, if
it has molecules from tyre rubber attached to it. These molecules
sometimes appear similar to enzymes produced by parasites and so the
immune system attacks the ‘parasite’.

Although more and more evidence is accumulating for a role for
environmental pollutants, this does not explain why New Zealand, which is
relatively unpolluted, has one of the highest incidences of asthma in the
world.

Electro-Magnetic Pollution
An increase in electro-magnetic pollution has run parallel with the
increase in allergies. The scientific jury is still out on the danger of
mobile phones, power lines, etc., but many people are becoming more
concerned about our constant exposure. People who are sensitive to
computers, etc. often also show many symptoms typical of allergic
individuals. In some cases correcting this sensitivity to
electro-magnetic sources, results in all or most of the adverse reactions
disappearing. (I recommend health kinesiology for this.)

Stress
The pace of life is quickening all the time: modern technology gives us
more possibilities and many of us want to experience as many of these as
we can. A survey found that half of the 950 young people in their 20’s
interviewed said that they would feel a failure if they did not own a

ISO
9002 ACCREDITED NATURIST HERBAL REMEDY

www.healasthma.com

by 26, were not married by 27 and not both rich and parents by 29.
Many of the interviewees said they were prepared to sacrifice a healthy
diet and way of life to achieve this. These expectations and pressures
are not conducive to long-term health and can also lead to stress and
allergies. Pre-packaged, processed foods eaten in front of the
television, too much alcohol, too little fresh air and exercise all take
their toll.

Sometimes particular traumatic events can explain a particular allergy.
One of my clients was allergic to wool and tea. She told me that when she
was a small child she had pulled a cup of hot tea on to herself. At the
time she was wearing a wool sweater, and the tea soaked into the sweater
and burnt her very badly.

Diet
It is now well known that bottle-fed babies are more likely to be prone
to allergy problems than breast-fed ones. Sudden or early weaning can
contribute to the problem too.

Sadly the modern diet may be abundant in calories, but there is more and
more evidence that it is low in some important nutrients. People are
eating more pre-processed foods, which may be nutritionally compromised.

Soil is becoming depleted of some minerals, because they have long been
taken up by plants grown in the soil. If the mineral is not in the soil,
it cannot be in the plant, and so it is not available in the foods we eat
either.

It is unlikely that there is one simple answer as to why people are
allergic, intolerant or sensitive in general or to particular substances.
Research is still being carried out in this fascinating area. Fortunately
with the tools that are available it is not necessary to know why someone
has allergy problems in order to be able to detect and correct them.

Why Choose Naturopathic Medicine?

Why Choose Naturopathic Medicine?

banner1a Why Choose Naturopathic Medicine?

  Dr. Tara Barker

Naturopathic medicine is a system and philosophy of medicine that has
been around for hundreds, perhaps thousands, of years. Before the advent
of ‘conventional’ medicine, which uses a wide variety of drugs and
surgical procedures, almost every doctor learned how to use herbs,
minerals,

opathy, and other natural methods to treat disease. Since
the early 1900’s and with the discovery of antibiotics, usage and public
knowledge of naturopathic medicine has declined. This was most likely due
to the ‘quick fix’ nature of many of the new drugs developed and
increased safety of surgical procedures. Diseases such as influenza and
measles, which today are generally nuisances and easily treated in most
people, were very scary and sometimes life threatening in these earlier
times. The plague literally plagued people. Today we are blessed with
better opportunities for proper nutrition, hygiene, and information about
these diseases, all of which lessen the threat of many of the more common
diseases becoming life threatening. The attraction that people had
towards conventional medicine was and is understandable. Treatments that
decrease symptoms of a disease are often well received by patients who
are dealing with a troublesome condition. Most advances in technology are
viewed as progress and people want the best, especially where their
health or that of their loved ones is concerned. The problem that came
with this flux towards conventional medicine was that it was new and no
one knew what the side effects or long-term effects of using synthetic
drugs would be. Also, most people abandoned the more natural methods of
health care and stopped caring for themselves in a way that would keep
them strong and vital. Instead they began using pills and surgery as
‘fixes’ when things went wrong. They began to eat more processed foods
that have fewer vitamins and minerals. Our environment became more
polluted. Most doctors know little about nutrition, how or what to eat,
or what to do with people affected by the environment. As well, the more
scientific medicine gets, the less people understand it. This leads to
people feeling ignorant about health matters and leaving all the power in
their doctor’s hands.

So, here we are today. When people feel sick or know something is wrong,
they make an appointment and usually get a prescription. If that doesn’t
work, another prescription is tried. If a person is lucky, they get sick
very infrequently and live healthy lives. Complications arise when the
treatments given don’t work or cause side effects that need another
treatment to lessen them. What happens if you have allergies, asthma, and
diabetes? How many prescriptions do you take? What if the drugs given
interact with each other or cause a nutritional deficiency? What about
the people who are on a drug for the rest of their lives? What about
people with chronic diseases that have been told they have no cure but
the symptoms can be ‘managed’?

What causes many of the above problems is the philosophy of the medicine
used. The focus should not be (however contrary it may sound) how to get
rid of whatever ails you, but why it began. If you can find out what
causes your disease and why it began for you, it is entirely possible to
foster your health in such a way that your body heals itself. It does
little good to get rid of an ear infection in your child if it returns
again. Why take an antiviral daily to suppress herpes outbreaks when this
can be done with lifestyle and natural methods that do the same thing
while enhancing your immunity? If you have advanced heart disease,
diabetes, or cancer, what feelings of hope do you have that your life can
be enhanced? If you take medications daily, perhaps in increasing doses,
for the rest of your life with your only hope to have better or stable
lab test results, that doesn’t sound like the quality life you could be
having. Did you know that with changes to your lifestyle and natural
therapies you could increase the energy you feel as well as possibly
reverse many of the damaging changes you now live with?

There are natural treatments for every complaint. I once heard from a
wise doctor, “There are no incurable diseases, only incurable people”.
What he meant was that every case of cancer may not be curable, but it is
possible to cure cancer. No condition is incurable. What happens in
treatment is more a factor of the person, the nature of the disease, and
other variables, and not so much which disease is being treated. It is
more difficult, of course, to treat diseases that are long-standing,
severe, or in other ways complicated. But that does not mean it can never
been done. If a person does not want treatment and they get something
from being in the place they are at, that makes recovery all the more
difficult. It is much easier to treat conditions when they first start
and when the person wishes to be well. But still there are no guarantees.

What tends to work best for most people is a multifaceted approach to
treating their condition. First, treat the whole person. Find out what
their needs are and treat them physically, mentally, emotionally, and
spiritually, as they need it. Treat their whole body. Migraines,
arthritis, and urinary infections can be related and not separate
diseases. A person may not need antibiotics or removal of an organ, they
may need something that seems entirely unrelated. The toddler with
constant stomach pains may not need medication; he may need to change day
cares. Try to understand what is going on for the person.

Second, treat them in such a way as to increase their vitality. The goal
is to increase the healing response within so that the body becomes
healthier and reverses the disease process naturally and in its time (if
this is possible). It may be necessary to provide some symptomatic
relief, but the goal of a treatment should not be to simply suppress the
symptoms. Just because symptoms are gone does not mean that the disease
is not there. The goal is a complete cure and no return of the condition
(sometimes this is possible, at other times it is not). Your body holds
an incredible healing force that wants to keep you in harmonious balance
at all times. Think of the miracle of healing a broken bone. Think of how
microorganisms cause your lungs much distress in bronchitis, yet how well
you breathe and how complete the cure when the body is done healing that
condition. Think of the miracle of life itself. If disease arises when we
hinder the body in maintaining its perfect balance, then restoring
conditions of balance will help our bodies to heal themselves. After all,
it is not the antibiotic that heals you. The antibiotic simply kills off
enough bacteria to allow your body the upper hand. Ask yourself if the
body shouldn’t have the upper hand to begin with. If you really do need
antibiotics, what is causing the bacteria to gain the upper hand?

Naturopathic medicine strives to restore balance by removing any
obstacles keeping your body from healing itself. Physicians using this
medicine understand the importance of treating each person individually
and in a way that helps restore their natural vitality. They also try to
use the most gentle yet effective treatment possible to avoid causing
side effects or interactions between treatments. Naturopathic physicians
also recognize the importance of using conventional medicine when it is
necessary. They will also use appropriate lab work, x-rays, and other
tools for diagnosis and tracking when necessary. As all physicians, they
frequently will refer a complicated condition to providers who can give
the patient the best care along with the natural treatments. Naturopaths
regard the wants and needs of their patients highly. A patient is
encouraged to share their goals and take and active part in their
healthcare. Consultations and treatments are generally longer than those
with a conventional practitioner so questions can be addressed and a
healing relationship established.

Why Most Goal Setting Programs Are Doomed to Failure

Why Most Goal Setting Programs Are Doomed to Failure

banner1a Why Most Goal Setting Programs Are Doomed to Failure

  Stuart A Lichtman

Have you ever read a book or seen a movie that featured the medieval
punishment where the offender had each of their arms and legs roped to a
horse and then the horses were whipped to a frenzy, pulling in opposite
directions until the offender was
ripped into pieces?

Not nice.

But that’s pretty much what we do to ourselves when we use a traditional
goal setting program.

Of course the results aren’t quite as bloody but they are as grisly:
failure, stress, let down, headaches, insomnia, etc.

Instead of four horses pulling frantically in four different directions,
we usually have four major parts of our brains doing the same thing.

Those four parts are:

- the left brain
- the right brain
- the midbrain
- the brainstem.

And each of these parts controls a major aspect of us.

The left brain is responsible for our conscious awareness and our
thoughts.

The right brain is responsible for our creativity, all sorts of rhythmic
behavior, putting together memory into useable chunks, etc. And it does
what it’s always done in a particular situation.

The midbrain is responsible for our emotional energy – the energy that
powers us in getting things done and in creating memories. And it does
what it’s always done in a particular situation.

The brainstem is responsible for physical stimulus-response, for jerking
our hand away from a hot stove, for hitting the tennis ball, for jerking
our car away from an intruding other driver. And it does what it’s always
done in a particular situation.

When these four parts aren’t in agreement on an objective and how to
achieve it, failure is almost certain.

And that’s the case with traditional goal setting systems because they
deal with only one of those parts, the conscious mind.

It’s something like asking someone who speaks only English, another only
French, another only Japanese and another only Russian to perform a job
that requires a high level of coordination among the four of them to be
successful.

The result is chaos, something like the old silent movies.

Or like a football team where each player is running a different play.

Well, that’s the case with traditional goal setting systems because only
the left brain understands words. The right brain understands
visualization and pattern, the midbrain understands real or imagined
emotions and the brainstem understands real or imagined physical behavior.

That’s why failure is so common.

But there is an alternative.

It’s this: translate your objective into the different languages each
part of the brain can understand.

Once you have translated your written objective and modified it so that
all four parts of the brain are in agreement, then you have made major
progress toward successfully achieving your goal.

The second step you need to take to successfully achieve an objective
revolves around the fact that essentially no one can maintain a conscious
focus on anything for more than 5 seconds.

Yet most traditional goal setting systems tell you to keep focused on
what you want to achieve. That can’t happen. Conscious long-term focus is
an impossibility.

But when the unconscious mind is focused on something – such as keeping
your heart beating and blood pumping, your body weight reasonably
constant or breathing – that something happens. Otherwise, we’d all be
dead.

Well, that kind of unconscious focus is required to consistently achieve
challenging objectives, too.

The third step to successfully achieve your objective is to level out the
unconscious road blocks that, otherwise, make accomplishing things
impossible. Since these roadblocks operate
without our conscious awareness — like asthma, headaches, and
maintaining a constant body weight when you consciously want to lose
weight — no level of conscious will power can overcome them.

But when properly instructed by the conscious mind, the unconscious will
instantly change its programming from opposing a result that you want to
support its achievement.

If you accomplish all three of these steps – translation, focus, and
removal of road blocks – then you have almost a 100 percent chance of
consistently achieving your seemingly impossible objectives.

Why Has Yoga Become So Popular?

Why Has Yoga Become So Popular?

banner1a Why Has Yoga Become So Popular?

  Howard VanEs

Did you know that over fifteen million people practiced yoga in 2003,
according to a landmark study by Yoga Journal Magazine. And the numbers
are expected to increase dramatically in subsequent years. Your own
experiences probably confirm this study – maybe you practice yoga, know
someone who does, or just take a walk along any busy main street – your
bound to see someone carrying a yoga mat. In fact you can’t even open a
magazine or newspaper without finding an article about yoga. So, how does
a 5000-year-old spiritual practice become today’s hottest mind/body trend?

Perhaps the best way to understand yoga’s popularity is to go right to
the people who practice it. If you ask them why, some of the more common
replies you might hear are “flexibility, increased energy, improved
focus, reduction of the symptoms associated with stress, and an overall
good feeling.” The fact is that yoga can have a rejuvenating effect on
all systems of the body including the circulatory, glandular system,
digestive, nervous, skeletal/muscular, reproductive system and
respiratory system.

On a physical level – according to the U.S. Dept. on Aging there four
components to good physical health: Strength, flexibility, balance,
aerobic capacity. It is interesting to note that yoga can accomplish all
these things and no fancy piece of equipment is needed – other than your
own body and a yoga mat.

Over the last 100 years our lives have become very fast paced: cell
phones, computers, internet, television. This along with a strong work
ethic often results in people out of balance – people experiencing a lot
of stress. Consequently, there is a strong need to de-stress – to quiet
our minds and rejuvenate our bodies. And yoga helps achieve this –
helping us return to a state of balance and health.

Yoga brings us into the moment – it is very difficult to practice and be
thinking about what happened at work today or the party tomorrow night.
Becoming present
in itself is a great release from stress. At its best, yoga meets the
student where they are – so it is adjusted to the student’s level and
capacity. That doesn’t mean it is particularly easy or particularly
challenging – it can be either or both on any given day.

Then there is the therapeutic component. Yoga can be used successfully
with conditions such as insomnia, back problems, digestion problems,
asthma, improving circulation, anxiety, weight loss, just to name a few.

Basically yoga is non –competitive; it is not about winning or losing –
you can go at your own rate. Of course people still compete with
themselves though and compare their posture to others in class.

In addition many of us are yearning for something more. Many of us have
shied away from organized religion yet seek a spiritual practice that
connects us to ourselves as well as something larger – a spiritual
practice that is non-dogmatic, without many rules. While most of the yoga
practiced in health clubs is primarily the physical aspects of yoga – the
philosophical side seeps in. And for those that want to learn more about
the philosophy of yoga information and classes are readily available to
them. At its simplest level yoga quiets the mind and opens the body –
setting the stage for withdrawing deeper inside oneself – to a place of
peace, a place of balance, a place of health. It is here where the divine
within us can be more easily discovered.

There are many different styles of yoga and it never needs to be boring -
it can be slow and gentle, it can challenge your strength, it can be
aerobic or vigorous or it can be very introspective. There is as style to
match most personalities. There is yoga for seniors, pre-natal yoga,
postnatal yoga, power yoga, gentle yoga, etc. There are classes that
focus on back care, yoga done in groups and one-on-one, privately with an
instructor. The yogic scriptures say there are some 84,000 postures and
variations. The field of yoga is huge and there is always, always
something new to learn.

The media has also helped spread the message of yoga and the fact the
celebrities like Madonna and Sting practice yoga doesn’t hurt either!
